Technology Tuesday: Advanced Power-Strips

Running out of ideas to save on your energy costs?  Not us!

Here is something you may not have thought about: Smart or Advanced Power Strips!

They are called “Smart Power Strips” and “Advanced Power Strips” fairly interchangeably.  However, these types of Power Strips, mainly, come in 2 varieties: Tier I and Tier II.  What is the difference between them?  Allow me to explain:

Tier I Advanced Power Strip (APS):  These power strips are designed to power down peripheral devices when a primary device is powered down.  For example, most office workspaces have a computer, a monitor, a printer, task lamp, etc.  Where a Tier I Advanced Power Strip is installed and the occupant powers down their computer at night or puts it in sleep mode, the Tier I Advanced Power Strip will turn off the peripheral devices.

Tier II Advanced Power Strip (APS):  Tier II Advanced Power Strips do everything the Tier I Advanced Power Strips do but take it a step further.  A Tier II power strip has sensors to detect when a primary device has not been in use for a pre-determined amount of time.  For example, let us think about the workstation scenario again.  Most computers have settings that prompt them to go into sleep mode after a certain amount of inactivity.  A Tier II power strip can sense this change and will power down your peripheral devices with no action from the occupant.

Depending on your needs, a Tier I or Tier II power strip may be more appropriate.  For example, if you are a person that must step away from his/her desk often throughout the day and for long periods of time, the Tier II Advanced Power Strip may be the best option.  Also, if you have a smaller budget, Tier I Advanced Power Strips may be more appropriate as they have a lower price point.
