I am sure you know California’s push toward 100% renewable energy.  A BIG part of this initiative is building electrification.  Building electrification means, converting from using natural gas appliances to appliances that use electricity.  There are many cost-effective ways to do this. 

When we think about it, the coordination required to deliver IDSM demands cooperation, understanding, and balance. Everyone and everything has to play their part just so. To achieve a true IDSM approach for portfolios technologies have to be in sync or, as it were, *NSYNC. 

As I am sure you are aware, your HVAC system is one of the biggest energy users in your building. In fact, HVAC is often responsible for 20-30% of the energy usage in a building. This is especially true in the Central Valley.

Energy savings are critical considerations for food service equipment in commercial kitchens, given the high operational costs and environmental impact associated with energy consumption. Implementing energy-efficient technologies and practices can save significant costs.  

Wish that you could somehow shift most of your cooling energy load to off-peak hours?Time-of-use rate changes are here and the hottest part of the day (4 pm – 6 pm) will become the most expensive time to use your air conditioner. It may be time to consider an ice storage air conditioner.

Through SoCalREN, agencies served by Southern California Edison can upgrade their gas water heaters to electric heat pump water heaters.  Overall, heat pump hot water heaters save energy by leveraging the principle of heat transfer, which is inherently more efficient than generating heat directly!

Sports field lighting can be a high monthly utility cost as many fields still have HID (High-Intensity Discharge), specifically Metal Halide lights. Many public agencies would like to switch out their older lights for new LEDs, but there is an upfront cost barrier.

We continue to say each year that lighting is not dead. Well, here we go again! Interior and exterior Lighting is being included in this year's SoCalREN cash incentive options.  LED lighting has become increasingly popular in public agency facilities and for good reasons.

In public infrastructure, ensuring efficient and reliable systems for heating water or space is paramount. Whether for municipal buildings, schools, hospitals, or other public facilities, the technology behind boilers, water heaters, and water heating products continues to evolve, offering innovative solutions that enhance performance, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness.

This month, we’re focusing on capacity and demand response's role in ensuring enough capacity to meet this ever-growing demand.  We can’t be so naïve to think that we can electrify all the things without grid impacts.

This year, for Black History Month, instead of celebrating the folks that entertain us, I would like to take a moment to celebrate the achievements of folks that have made contributions in areas that make our lives better each day.

We love you. For 15, 10, eight, and five years we have committed ourselves to you. And we don’t see an end in sight.  You have been not just a foundation, but deeply rooted in all we do.  So, on this Valentines Day, we felt it necessary to say it boldly, to all who will listen we love you!

How do we do a year of content around IDSM and not sound outdated?  Better yet, how do we “Courtney-proof” a year of IDSM content?  You see, it’s one of those topics that I just can’t get excited about and if I can’t get excited about it, I have a hard time imagining anyone getting excited about it.  IDSM has been rolling around for a bit now, and I think in 2019 I was way into it; we had designed an IDSM curriculum and were in the process of recruiting our first cohort in early March 2020.  But a global pandemic, a shift from in-person cohorts, and five years later…it’s just not hitting for me.  So why are we here?

As we kickstart another year, we start to envision our goals or intentions for the next 12 months. Is it to walk more during the day or to use less single use plastic or to decrease your carbon footprint? Maybe it is to make a new purchase? Save for a fun trip or a new vehicle?
